When gold was discovered at Nowendoc (about 1873), many men came in search of their fortune, but when luck ran out many became cedar-getters.The first steam engine to operate a sawmill came to Nowendoc in 1901.This industry has seen many changes over the years, with men being able to find work at Nowendoc when other towns had no employment for them. The men were able to bring their families to Nowendoc as the mills also provided housing for them. The school benefited from the increase in children which in turn meant an increase in resources and teaching staff. Social activities also expanded with the new community members being encouraged to join in with the locals. Local graziers took advantage of becoming employed in the timber industry when times were hard, due to the economy and recession.Radiata Pine
The planting of Radiata Pine (Pinus Radiata) first took place on a 139 hectare block in the Riamukka
State Forest. These plantings were carried out under guidelines set out by the NSW Forestry Commission in 1972. A harvesting and replanting program has seen the Riamukka site being one of the most productive plantations in NSW. The Forestry Corporation now undertake a harvesting and replanting program.
