Wingham is a charming rural service centre in the Manning River Valley. This town has a
population of about 5,300 and remains relatively untouched by the tourism boom that has changed the coastal towns in the region. Wingham is the older town in the Manning Valley and was first settled by cedar cutters, and later land used by dairy farmers and beef cattle breeders.
Recreation on the Manning River is popular for boating, canoeing, swimming, fishing and water skiing.Things to see/do in the area include: Central Park (featuring historic buildings, a 400 year old tallow wood log, the Vampire Jet (RAAF), and the
plaque saying "The Origin of Rugby League" - recognising the moment on 8 August 1908 that Alec Burdon played a game at this site). Self-Guided
Heritage Walk, with 21
places listed on a brochure you can pick up from the Historical Society Museum in Farquhar Street. Wingham Brush
Nature Reserve and Wharf - on the banks of the river.
Ellenborough Falls and
Tinonee.
