This area is designed for visitors to stop and enjoy viewing the canal with
toilets and picnic facilities, information signboards and shops offering coffee and
bakery. Sufficient street
parking for long trailers. The Denison Canal is the only canal in Australia built solely for the use of small craft. Originally dug by hand between 1901 and 1905 it joins Dunalley Bay and Blackman Bay, the bodies of water on each side of East Bay Neck through which it was dug. It now separates the Forester and Tasman Peninsulas from the Tasmanian main land via a
bridge that
swings clear to make way for boats to pass through. The canal is just over 2.5 km long. A total of 37,500 cubic metres of material was removed. The canal is popular with yachts returning from the
Sydney-
Hobart Yacht Race as it saves the much longer and often much rougher route around
Cape Raoul and Storm Bay. The swing
bridge was built in 1965.
