This monument was erected by the government of Tasmania to mark the 300th anniversary of the sighting of the West Coast of Tasmania, (then called then Van Diemans Land) by the Tasman expedition on 24 November 1642.
The monument was unveiled on 3 December 1942 at Tasman Bay on the coast. About 10 km north east of Donnelly is the first Tasman monument built by the royal Society of Tasmania in 1923. It marks the place where the Dutch flag was planted on third of December 1642.
