This large
rock was named after a pioneer cattle owner, George Neagle, who in the late 1840's lived at the foot of the
hill on which he
rock is situated.
From the earliest days,
the rock was favourite picnic ground and a rendezvous for lovers and was known as "Lovers Retreat".
In 1935 the
hill was in danger of being stripped of its timber, and Mr Henry Lewcock suggested the property be purchased by public subscription and made a flora and fauna sanctuary.
The land was purchased and the deeds presented to the Corporation in 1936, with the principal donor, Mrs
John Christison who also gave
Clare Pioneer Park and Christison Park to the people of
Clare.
