Clare's first Police Station was on the banks of the Hutt and Wakefield Rivers near the town of
Mintaro. With the towns growing
population and the need for a Police Station in the town as
well as a local Courthouse a permanent location was chosen.
This building was the first permanent Police Station in
Clare and was erected on the western edge of
Clare and was opened in 1850 and was constructed by Messrs Palmer and Williams.
The building had 2 rooms, one for a courtroom and the other for the Police Troopers and prison cells. In 1855 a police reserve was surveyed of around 56 acres where the police horses were pastured. By 1870
Clare was the headquarters of the Northern Division of the Mounted Police and was under control by Inspector Saunders.
Today the
old Police Station is run by the National Trust as a museum.
