After having sold my Troopy bushcamper I'm now tent camping and have to give a bit more thought to safety. Does anyone have any ideas about safe camping spots, prefer Southern / Western and Mallee areas. I have a little dog for company so she has to be considered. She's like me - done a lot of miles but fairly quiet! I can manage without lighting fires if it's an issue and don't need power. I just want to be able to pitch camp and not be scared witless in the night by 'rootin', tootin', shootin' yahoos !!!!!

It's not that bad !
If you feel that unsafe, why go out anyway ?
Stick to the popular spots.

In all my years camping ect, have only struck yahoo's once, and I fixed them anyway

Cheers

Hi Meri. A couple of our 'camping' rules - avoid camping any closer than 10Kms from a town (drunken hoons don't generally bother travelling that far). When you find a spot take a little time to look around - any signs of 'circle work', rubbish around, fireplaces stacked with unburnt rubbish. Also, park defensively - park in such a way that you have an avenue for a quick exit if needed.
I'm not intending to be alarmist, just be aware, not paranoid. Most importantly - get out there and do it!!

i have only ever tent or swag camped and over many years have never had any issues with safety. I have at times left my tent unattended for a few days whie of exploring and never had anything 'borrowed'. I have stayed in place both near and far to 'civilization' and even the yobbos tend to stay in their own patch even if rowdy. In all of my years i dont remember moving due to the nuisance value. My wife also has never had any issues with 'problem children'

As said above.
Quote, A couple of our 'camping' rules - avoid camping any closer than 10Kms from a town (drunken hoons don't generally bother traveling that far).

Another thing to watch for is make sure that you set up camp in daylight as one can inadvertently put ones tent over an ants nest.
Usual thing do not set up under old river gums or trees that house many birds or Koala's. Their droppings ...phew... and sometimes limbs do fall.

We once set up our tent late in the evening and during the night it rained,
inside was dry but we had camped on black soil and it was messy once we stepped outside.
Our dog used to sleep at the foot of our bed near the door so he was an early warning system for us.

Do not be afraid when camping as worse happens in suburbia.

I used to have a handle on life, but it broke.

Cheers Dodg.

Having camped in the bush for many years in all parts of Australia I would say exactly the same as Dodger and Lucko and remember that common sense always will tell you if something is wrong.Be aware of your surroundings but don't get paranoid about what might go wrong as Aus. camping is very safe from my experience so go and enjoy.I do a lot of hunting in very remote spots and have never had a problem.

Hi Meri

While I don't have saftey concerns when camping , I like to have all bases covered and we sleep inside our Patrol , maybe your car could be re-arranged for that.

Its good to know that you can drive off without putting a foot outside the car if a bit awkward.
As you no doubt found with your troppy its quieter than a tent and more secure.

There are many safe spots in your area like Broken bucket and Big billy , the pines and many others as shown of the Mallee 4wd map.

Thanks a lot to all who took the trouble to reply.
I do try at keep a positive attitude and apply all the suggestions mentioned, in all my years of camping I have only ever had one bad experience - and it was recently - and I had set camp almost 30 ks from a town!
I appreciate the help and will check out the suggestions made re camp areas.

Ta, Meri
