Heading along the Anne Beadell in three weeks

We are leaving Norseman on Friday 6th May heading to Laverton and then along the Anne Beadell to Coober Pedy and onto William Creek to take a flight over Lake Eyre. We are in three very well prepared 4x4s (5 mature blokes - all in our 60's sleeping out in swags - no trailers) We are taking a couple of weeks to get to William creek and will be checking out the possibility of crossing the Simpson to Birdsville (Eyre creek being open) before heading home to Perth via Woomera and the Googs track (5 or 6 weeks all up).
Any one interested in tagging along for part or all of our planned trip and sharing our camp fires. Your welcome to message me with your details and we can have a chat.

Steve.

Hi

We spent 8 days on the Anne Beadell June 2010. The planning and preparation for the trip was exciting, the actual drive was one huge adventure and we're still talking about it...it's one special track. All the best with your mates!

Mary,
If there is next G Telstra available in Coober Pedy I will post a report on the condition of the Anne Beadell.

We intend to stay two nights in Coober Pedy to allow us time to look around and do some washing as well as catch up with emails ect.

Hi Michael,

Thanks for your good wishes, Yes I enjoy the planning and preparation as well but after months of planning I just want to get out there.

As one of our party is from the Gold Coast and the other two of us are from Perth we had originally planned to commence in Birdsville (the Eastern end of our planned trip) as it is more central to everyone, however, as the floods and the eastern states rain fall have closed off the Birdsville end, we have changed plans and made those from the Gold Coast do 3665klm dash across the bitumen to meet us at Norseman to start from the west and give the Eyre creek more time to go down enough to be opened to let us out of the Simpson.

The planning stage is enjoyable but making last minute changes after all the permits are in place is frustrating.

Our plans are for 10 nights camping along the Anne Beadell, we are not in a rush, two nights in Coober Pedy before going over to William Creek for an early morning flight over Lake Eyre including the painted Desert. We will then make our way up to Mt Dare to take on 670ltrs of Diesel between the three vehicles before heading into the Simpson.

We have planned 6 days to cross the Simpson, but are very flexible on time, and if we need to double back we will take our time and try a few of the alternate tracks on the way back west.

Most of us are newly retired (or semi retired) and have told our loved ones and partners back home that we will be home some time in June. We are carrying a Sat phone to check track conditions and update those at home on our progress and we have a Spot tracker with us that allows all back at home to watch our daily progress on Goggle Earth. Don't we live in marvellous times?

Hi Steve

It is a great trip with lots to see along the way. My only advise is to keep your tyre pressures right down and this will make the greatest difference to your comfort to you and your vehicle.

At this stage it looks like you will have to rethink the Simpson section because of Eyre Creek.

Have a great time.

Cheers

Thanks for your advise, we do drop pressures on the tracks especially with corrugations and by all reports, we are expecting many kilometres of corrugations.

The Simpson crossing will happen from the west, the only difference is which end do me emerge from. If Eyre creek is closed when we get to it, we will double back. We are all carrying over 200 litres of diesel each to allow us to go back the way we came. We are expecting to get to Eyre creek on the last day of May so we have some chance of the crossing being open. We Hope.

Looking forward to getting started.

A group of EO members did the Anne Beadell last year on the way to the Willuna gathering.
Fuelled up at the Ilkurka RH although Howard driving a petrol Landcruiser had to hand pump Opal from a drum. Three of the 4 vehicles in our group also broke side mirrors so wise to fold them in.
Have fun.

We will have fun, thanks for your wishes.

My Jeep Wrangler has no problems with its mirrors, strangely its design has the mirrors not protruding past the guards and side steps and those items are quite robust plastic, so far so good. Never the less I will take your advice and fold them in , who needs to know what's behind you out there anyway?

But I do fear for one of our parties brand new LC200 Sahara V8 diesel with its new bright burgundy paintwork, I think we might change the look of that whilst out there. He says this is what he bought it for but I bet there will still be some tears shed.

Cant wait!!

Steve,

This was Jeff O's brand new Burgundy 200 series at Coober Pedy before he did the Anne Beadell with Scrubby, travelling separately to our group. LOL
