Gday All,
Over Christmas the Mrs., Kids and I are heading to WA for 6 Weeks.
We aren't the sort to have big trip plans but rather take it as it comes. Basically we are arriving in
Geraldton a day or so before Christmas and have booked into a caravan park for 6 days. After that we're not too sure.
We have an 80 reries and off road camper, but living in
the desert we will probably not be going too far into the scrub but rather slothing around the ocean and keeping your brewery workers employed. (FISHING!!! YOU BEAUTIE!!)
We plan to travel up the coast a few 100km but not too far that we end up coming
home (
Alice Springs) the top way.
We aren't trying to do half of OZ in 6 Weeks!
We're actually thinking about moving to
Geraldton area in the next couple of years so need to have a bit of a look around.
A couple of questions I have for anyone who knows the area are...
Do we need to plan ahead to get into caravan parks, are there
bush camping areas or can we just book in as we feel(Christmas holidays)?
What things and
places are worth a look that I wont find in your standard tourist brochures.?
Any advice or Ideas regarding the
Geraldton area ,especially FISHING TIPS (I wont tell anyone your secret spots I promise) would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers
Hairy

Hi Hairy,
Yep there will be wind specially in the afternoon, but it helps cool you down and keep some of the fly's away, (particularly bad this year. There is a spot about 40kms north of
Geraldton called Corination beach, $5 per nite to an onsite caretaker on the water, drop loos only. bit further north is
Kalbarri not been there as I've only been in the state since 85 (he he) but I hear its great.
About 70 k's south of of G there is Dongarra Pt Denison nice on
the beach spots
About 45 ks further south is
Sandy cape (sometimes refered to as
Sandy point I don't know which is correct) again a cartaker on site minimal facilities.
I think you would have to book at Kal and Dongarra. and take pot luck at the others.
Have a great time
Rgds
Ian

Gidday you fine figure of a man (Hairy)
Ernie
Dingo lived in
Geraldton, but I think he's moved on to the big smoke. I have Ernie's mobile number somewhere around the house if you want it.
Ernie came out of Bullaroo Station as a lad, and would still have a few contacts in the area if you want to
bush camp for a while.
The other Aboriginal fella who may be of interest to you, is Sam Lovell out of
Derby.
If your interested, send me a MM.
PS Once again I have to apologize for the behaviour of my twin brother....!
Regards
Kim

Geraldton is a great place, but i am biased. I live here!!!
Yes it will be windy, and it will be hot, but i guess living in Alice, the heat wont be an issue.
The beaches in town are pretty good, but it is windy. Fishing wise, (i don't fish) there is a place about 1 hour north of
Geraldton called
Lucky Bay. (your lucky if you can find it!!) (its about 10km above
Port Gregory) however it isn't
sign posted at all. It is free to stay, and you basically
camp behind the sand dunes. There are no shops, no nothing. The local fishing club do trips to it & some local famers have beach
shacks there.
Kalbarri is a must, great sceanery, heaps of stuff for kids, sand boarding, bird paradise, seahorse sanctury etc.
I don't know how far north you are going, but
Coral Bay is just great. (between
Carnarvon and
Exmouth) right on the
ningaloo reef, great fishing & great snorkelling metres from shore. It is basically just two caravan parks. A great spot.
Let us know if you want to know anything else.
have a good trip
Paul

I too was going to mention
Lucky bay! I also live in gero. Coronation beach is good as previously mentioned but its only about 25km out of town. Lots of windsurfers in the arvo (me also!) And there is a windsurfing contest on just after new year so camping will be chockers. But you can get away with camping most spots up
the beach tracks if your inconspicuous.
It certainly is windy in the summer arvo's. If not windy then hot. Flies a prob usually only in the easterly breeze.
If not into windsurfing then winter is the best time of year by far.

Flies, wind and heat. Terrible drought out that way too - Nabawa / Yuna etc.
Northampton area is worth a look and while you're there head out to the coast around
Horrocks. The
geography is a real anomaly.
There's a
pink lake near
Port Gregory which is sort of intersting.
If you have plenty of time, head east and
check out Coalsem. It looks like the setting from an American cowboy film.
Keep in mind the whole region looks completely different in winter.
Kalbarri is
well worth the trip and great for kids if you want to go a bit further afield. Stunning view from cliffs, nice river to swim in, 4x4 tours of
Murchison House Station etc
If you go further south you can see
the Pinnacles. Good to see once in your lifetime.
There are some magic little books published by Western 4WDriver magazine (?) and they have all kinds of intersting things in them for trips around WA. I can't recommend these highly enough.

I spent 2 weeks there visiting a sick Father in Law, but didn't get to look around much as I was car-less.
We stayed in a cabin at the Bellair Gardens caravan park near the light house. Nice and quiet with grassed sites, walking distance to
the beach and to town (if you like a long walk;-) )
Fishing from
the beach and a
rock shelf that runs off
the beach looked promising, but I didn't catch a thing. More a reflection of my abilities as an angler than the number of fish in the water. Going along with a 5 year old who would nude-up and launch herself into the sea where I was tossing lures probably didn't help matters.
