Sand Man (SA)
Hi Ruth,
Have just returned from a visit to
Dalhousie Springs and have a different slant on the Itchy Bite theory.
We visited Dalhousie and had a dip in
the Springs, (but did not traverse the Simpson by vehicle) and can report none of our party has experienced the Itchy Bite phenomenon.
Could it be the result of Sand Flies or similar, that may have caused the bites or rash?
We found a dip in
the Springs to be very refreshing, with no "after effects".
Just loved the feeling of being nibbled on by the tiny fish that live in the water.

Hey SandMan, how are you both? (No, I don't mean you've got a split personality - LOL).
No, definitely not sandflies - but in an earlier post yesterday (I think) someone else had a refreshing dip in
the Springs with no ill effect.
Possibly only affects those with some sort of sensitivity (no, Sand Man, I am not suggesting you are insensitive - LOL again).
Glad you enjoyed the trip.

Evening Ruth,
Cold as, here tonight, with big wind(outside, that is!). A mate said it's snowing in
Katoomba.
When I first read about the bites, at Dalhousie, sounded like duck lice to me. Had the same problem up in the
Gregory River. But you only seem to get "hit" if you sit near the water's edge, or on the bank, with feet in the water. The latter can have most uncomfortable results!!!!
See ya,
Bob.

Hi Ruth,
We are both very
well thanks and sort of sated after the trip, although they are never long enough.
Camping at the Algebackina
Waterhole, brought back memories of our time down the back corner by the Diamantina River at your Caravan Park and also the
Cullyamurra Waterhole on
Cooper Creek.
Must plan another trip to
Birdsville and
Innamincka.
Cheers,
Bill & Bev.

G'day SandMan,
a friend recently returned from that region , and had a dip in
the springs also.
Whilst he was unbitten, his wife had many bites that they too assumed came from the spirings as they developed very soon after.
It could be a bit like Mosquitoes who just can't get enough of some bloodtypes and leave others alone... just another theory!

Hi Dan,
An interesting theory all the same.
We mentioned the symptoms to
the Pilot and also to Adam at
Oodnadatta.
Neither of them had heard of this before.
Now some
young Uni Graduate could spend a year or so out there completing a post graduate thesis on the "Dalhousie Itchy Bite" cause and effect.
All humour aside, it must be a bugger for those who do develop a skin problem, which would no doubt put a dampener on their holiday experience.
