Hello all. I'm planning a trip with the family (3 kids - no pets) for the mid year school holidays. One of the
places on my list is
Marree SA. I noticed there are two caravan parks there. We will be travelling VERY light, so will probably need Cabin accomodation, linen etc. My wife says, "An ensuite is a must!" (Likes to sleep under the stars - 3 is good, five is best......if you get what I mean).
What I'm after from all you seasoned travellers is an UNBIASED opinion of which caravan park you'd recommend.
The one on the corner of the
Birdsville track or the one on the other side of town near the Oonadatta Track?
I'm finding it really difficult to get information on either.
Thanks to all in advance!
Cheers, Flinders Fab & City Sonja.

Pardon the pun here, but the only reason you would be at
Marree would be as a stop over for a trip along either the
Birdsville or
Oodnadatta Tracks. Unless you have been there before and fell in love the the place, a holiday at
Marree doesn't ring right mate, but each to his own. How long is the trip for? Would the Flinders Rangers be on your list. Good accom there. The Wilpena Resort is a 4*

Marree is listed on it. HAGW

"one of the
places......" you're right. It's for a stop over only NOT the destination.
Been to the Pound Resort and yes that's on the list alreday ... loved it there, top place, good hikes and the kids loved the roos.
Marree is for an overnighter only.
Thanks for the link ..... I'll have a look.
I was more after personal recommendations though.

The Oasis closer to town is the pick ,star rating =1 billion , ensuite =whats that , when we looked at the drovers rest place was filthy and nothing like advertised ,imho would not let a dog stay at the place.

Thanks Alloy c/t.
When I was last in
Marree, about 3 years back, I did notice all the tourist buses seem to stop at the Oasis so I thought that would probably be the pick of the crop. Not sure if they have cabins there or not. Thanks for the info.
Just a foot note to the first reply in this thread, about
Marree having not much going for it.
Well I've had a think about that comment, and I would have to disagree.
Marree has just as much going for it as what
Birdsville does. Lets face it, it's the isolation that _Affordable_Storage_Drawers.aspx us to
places like
Marree and
Birdsville not the Westfield Plazas or surf beaches. Plus it has quite a history surrounding the railroad, "The" mailrun to
Birdsville, a great pub and even has it's own MCG. (
Marree Cricket Ground).
Next time you're up that way, get up before dawn, and go for a 10kay hike up either the
Birdsville track or the
Oodnadatta Track. Then if you still don't like it. At least you'll be 10 kays closer to your destination.

I've only travelled through Maree once just after big rain last July. The Oasis was a boggy mess, packed to the rafters and the attitude of the staff was appalling. I went to the Drovers rest which was half full, clean facilities, good service. I'd recommend that based on my experience.

I suppose conditions change from time to time however we stayed at the Drover's Rest and would go back again.
