Hi all,
After ten years of waiting, we are finally getting to do the outback trip we have wanted to do. The trip is planned from mid June for three weeks, and we are planning to go:-
Brisbane -
Roma -
Charleville -
Windorah -
Birdsville -
Boulia -
Winton -
Longreach -
Emerald -
Rockhampton - Hervey bay for a few days camping/rest -
Brisbane.
Having no experience of these areas, or locations between , we are looking for advice as to the
places we should go, points of interest, sights to see and things we would hate to miss.
Any suggestions/advice would be gratefully received.
Thanks
Taf

Taf,
Check out thread 100760 for some details on a similar trip to the one you've planned.
While in
Birdsville check out the Working Museum,
Bakery and the Pub. The Min Min Centre in
Boulia, and the Stone House. Stop at
Cawnpore Lookout, between
Boulia and
Winton........some top scenery there, especially late in the day.
Middleton Pub, an old Cobb & Co pub, in pretty good order is less than 2 hours from
Winton. Good scenery through Swords Range, before hitting the
Diamantina Channels, about 65kms from
Winton.
You can turn off the
Winton-
Boulia road at Lilleyvale, and travel down to
Old Cork waterhole, then across to
Lark Quarry Dinosaur Stampede, if you're happy to travel along some gravel roads. They are usually in good repair.
There's plenty more but I've run out of time,
Enjoy your trip,
Bob.

Bob I believe the Museum is still closed, The guy who owned it couldn't sell so just shut the doors.
Certainly was worth a look though.

While at
Longreach consider going on the Cobb and Co stagecoach ride which follows the old town common and roads that Lawson and Patterson went on.

Great camping spots along the Cooper just out of
Windorah. But at this point in time, who knows how much water will be in the Cooper when you are there.Depends on any late rain fall.

Deon's lookout is worth a stop. On the left about half way between
Windorah and
Birdsville. It is just before the new
Betoota bypass.

Try a few Station Stays rather than C Parks and overcrowded and dirty free camps! I only know of one that would be close to your route, that''s Windemere Station near
Winton. There are a coouple near
Charleville too. It's a different experience to stay at someones
home and place of work as in on a working station. Cheers Toni

While in
Boulia also look at through the Museum at their Dinosaur displays [not advertised as such] , you'l get to meet an icon of dinosaur discovery in Australia [Dinosaur Dick Soutar] ,, also take the Morella Rd which starts between
Winton and
Longreach and takes you to
Muttaburra the
home of the Muttabarasauras Langdoni and its finder Doug Langdon who does Museum tours in the town ,,,
