Just 8km west of the
Birdsville Track the
Warburton Track crosses the
Warburton Creek. This contains the combined flows of Eyre Ck and the Diamantina R which will have spread out into the Goyder Lagoon and take months to subside.
This is the critical southern entry/exit to the
Simpson desert. High water levels have kept the crossing closed in 2009 and 10 with 2011 likely to be a repeat. Open in 2015. 2018 looked good until big rains in Qld in early March sent floodwaters downstream. A stream gauge 3 km downstream got to 3.4 m deep by May then down to 0.74 m by Sept with the crossing open.
2019 as of March has an even bigger flood on the way. Water cut the crossing on 14th rising from zero to a level of 5 m in 2 days and peaking at 5.7m.
Lake Eyre Yacht Club having a sail starting here and down to Kalamurina in mid April.
2020 - open in July subject to Covid restrictions. 2023 closed until at least mid July.
