Lake Benanee is a large freshwater lake 13km east of Euston and is one of
3 lakes you'll come across on the road to
Balranald. When full, the lake covers an area of around 750 hectares.
Lake Benanee has a beach area and
public toilets and is easily seen and accessed from the Sturt Highway. The
rest area consists of a large gravel
parking area with a couple of shelters,
toilets and
bins. A very pleasant spot beside the lake including a range of wildlife that varies throughout the seasons. There is also evidence of Aboriginal burials here dating back 40,000 years.
The riparian area fringing the lakes and creeks in the Euston Lakes system are dominated by River red gum and Black box. The endangered Swamp she-oak (Casuarina obesa) and the vulnerable A spear-grass (Austrostipa metatoris) as listed under the Threatened Species Conservation Act 1995 (TSC Act) and have been recorded to occur in the fringing vegetation of
Lake Benanee.
