Yalwal is a former gold mining town. This historic goldmining area once boasted a substantial town serviced by a school, stores, pubs, banks and a
post office. During the First World War some of the homes were dismantled and used as building materials for the war effort. The last of the gold mines closed in the 1920's and the 1939 bushfire destroyed the township. In 1972 the valley was flooded to create Danjera
Dam and all that now remains of
the settlement is the graveyard and
mine workings in the surrounding area.
Today the area is a beautiful and tranquil unspoilt wilderness area where you can enjoy pristine bush and abundant wildlife. Bushwalking, fishing, swimming, canoeing and nearby 4WD tracks are the key attractions for visitors. Active visitors will enjoy the numerous walking tracks to good sites such as
Tianjara Falls, and Monument Rocks.
The
campsite offers plenty of room for camper trailers and larger groups on flat
camp grounds (albeit hard ground). Road access is good (2WD accessible) with the last 15kms being gravel. Located 26km from Nowra this can get popular - especially if you time it when another large group is there.
Facilities are managed by Shoalhaven City Council and include
toilets, BBQ facilities, water (not for drinking) and
bins for recycling. No showers. Firewood is not provided but open fires are allowed if there no fire restrictions in place. Dogs allowed on lead
