Geologists believe that these Sandhills originated after the last Ice Age, 40,000 years ago. Wind erosion over thousands of years has created this large dune system north west of
Wentworth. Skeletal remains of giant mega-fauna such as kangaroos, lions, emus and wombats have been found in this area, replicas of which can be seen in the local Pioneer Museum. During World War 2, these Sandhills were used as a bombing range.
