The
Lake Harry Ruins, located north of
Marree along the
Birdsville Track in South Australia's arid outback, are remnants of an experimental date palm plantation established in the late 19th century. The plantation was part of an effort to cultivate dates using the region's natural artesian water from the Great Artesian Basin. Despite initial promise, the project failed by the early 20th century due to harsh climatic conditions, soil salinity, and logistical challenges.Today, visitors to the site can explore the crumbling stone structures, remnants of irrigation channels, and interpretive signage that provides insight into the plantation's history. Free
bush camping is permitted here and the site is accessible to caravans, tents and all types of rigs. No facilities at all. This is a remote, arid area.
