Salt lagoon with evaporation ponds at southern end. Good
views from hills along the George
Grey Drive heading to
Kalbarri.
It's official name of Hutt Lagoon was given by explorer George
Grey who camped on its edge in 1839, however it is commonly referred to as
Pink Lake.
Hutt Lagoon is a
salt lake with a pink hue due to the presence of the carotenoid producing algae, Dunaliella salina, which is a source of beta-carotene, used as a food-colouring agent and source of Vit A. in cosmetics and supplements.
The lagoon contains the worlds largest microalgae production plant.
