Information

This is the best area for viewing the Pink Lake. Whilst the pink colour of the lake is due to algae, the colour appears most vivid when the sky is clear (no clouds) and the sun is shinning and overhead (between 10am - 2pm is best). This is a year-round natural phenomenon.

It's official name of Hutt Lagoon was given by explorer George Grey who camped on its edge in 1839.

Hutt Lagoon is a salt lake with a pink hue due to the presence of the carotenoid producing algae, Dunaliella salina, This is a source of beta-carotene, used as a food-colouring agent and source of Vitamin A in cosmetics and supplements. The lagoon contains the worlds largest microalgae production plant.
