Lake McKenzie is a 'perched' lake, which means it contains only rainwater,is not fed by creeks and does not flow to the ocean. The organic matter on the bottom of the lake forms an impervious layer, preventing rainwater from seeping away. The sand acts as a filter, making the water crystal clear and makes the water so pure it can support very little life.
