Lake Mungo is an ancient dry lake located in south-western NSW. Protected within the
Mungo National Park and within the World
Heritage listed Willandra Lakes Region.
Lake Mungo is a significant site due to the recent discovery of the remains of what became known as Mungo Man – the oldest human found in Australia and Mungo Lady, the oldest person in the world to be ritually cremated.
Lake Mungo is the central feature of
Mungo National Park, and is one of seventeen lakes in the Willandra Lakes system. The sediments at Lake Mungo have been deposited more than 100,000 years ago and the eastern shore of the lake is what’s called the '
Walls of China' – a 26 km long series of lunettes, about thirty metres high, formed over thousands of years.
