The
Moulting Lagoon Game Reserve is listed as a Ramsar site because it is an important habitat for a number of rare and vulnerable plants and animals.
•Moulting Lagoon supports large numbers of waterfowl, particularly black swans (Cygnus atratus) and Australian shelducks (Tadorna tadornoides) at critical stages of their life cycles. Up to 10,000 black swans live here all year round. The number of waterbirds increases in summer, when the shelducks, chestnut teal (Anas castanea), and a number of migratory shorebird species also use the area.
• Twenty-five plant species that are listed as threatened in Tasmania have been recorded in the Reserve, ranging from diminutive trigger plants (Stylidium spp.) to the endangered small tree golden spray (Viminaria juncea), the Moulting Lagoon area being the only known location for the latter in Tasmania.
• Like most estuaries and coastal wetlands, this area is an important fish. nursery. With its inflow of fresh water, mixed salinities, aquatic vegetation, and abundant bird life, Moulting Lagoon is a complex
m worthy of preservation.
