Gillingarra is a small rural locality with a total
population of 40 people. The area features a beautiful seasonal display of
wildflowers and is easily accessible from
Perth or nearby
New Norcia. The
nature reserve with the locality protects significant birdlife. The old school site is a rest area/
overnight camp.
The Gillingarra Siding was situated at a
crossroads 4
miles south of the school. As the community established, the siding was a focus, and the place developed, soon realising the need for a school and church. Funds were raised by bazaars and sports meeting at Yarawindah sports ground. South of the siding was the pumping station in the river, which supplied water for the trains and also was a popular swimming spot.
Remains of the siding and goods shed are visible today. Timber framed and clad with vertical sheets of corrugated iron. The roof is clad with corrugated iron and is skillion, falling to the rear.
