Travelling east from Bairnsdale there are two options. The original passes through
Lakes Entrance but an alternative runs inland to rejoin the Princes Highway at Nowa Nowa. The only town on this road is Bruthen which is located at
the junction with The Great Alpine Road that passes through
Omeo,
Hotham Heights and
Bright to Wangaratta. The
Tambo River also runs through the town.
Bruthen offers a range of
services but is known for its park lands in the main street that are adjacent to a range of food outlets including a
bakery and an hotel. It also has a boutique brewery. The town has a
population of around 800.
