Nestled in the Cathedral Valley, the tiny township of Taggerty is a paradise for lovers of nature. The Cathedral Range State Park offers an easy stroll through the river valley, the challenge of a steep climb up to, and along the ridge or simply the tranquillity of some time out beside the Little River. Trout fishing in the cool waters where the
Acheron and
Goulburn Rivers meet.
The history of Taggerty can be traced back to 1846 when a pastoral run called Taggerty Run was established. The
homestead of the run was called Taggerty House. In 1870 Gold was discovered along the
Acheron River, this in turn led to the establishment of two settlements, named
Acheron Lower and
Acheron Upper, these were later renamed as
Acheron and Taggerty respectively. The
Post Office opened on April 15, 1876 and was renamed Taggerty in 1893.
Acheron Upper Primary School opened in 1875. The
general store opened in 1891, as did a butter factory, reflecting the area’s shift from gold mining towards dairy farming. The town was given the name Taggerty in 1890 to avoid confusion with
Acheron Lower.
Today Taggerty remains a small township, with a
general store, a town hall, a caravan park, and several bed and breakfasts.
