Located at the left abutment of the 3000 GL Hume
dam as a formless but functional 50's style concrete building. Completed in 1957 as part of the upgrade to the
dam, two 25 MW units began service. More or less continuous large daily releases of 5 to 15 GL for irrigation are required from Sept to April so the station runs 24/7. From May to August the
dam is filling and only a minimal release of 400 ML/day is made.
The head on the turbines at maximum water level in the
dam is only about 30 m, so the large flow of water is needed to produce power. Thus a linear flow of 25 cumecs thrusts against each of the Kaplan turbines which are shaped like a ships propeller. The water pressure forces them to rotate and being connected to the generator both spin at the same rpm. Electric energy is produced as the generator rotor makes a magnetic field sweep across the windings of the stator and induce an alternating current in them. The power is the multiple of the output voltage and the current.
