In September 1836, Major Thomas
Livingstone Mitchell and his party reached the Talbot district and passed in the vicinity of Mount
Greenock. Upon his return to
Sydney he gave impressive reports as to the suitability of the land for sheep grazing.
The settlement commenced when Alexander McCallum arrived in the area in June 1841.
In 1859, gold was discovered at Talbot and that put an end to the quiet rural character of the area at the time. Prior to the discovery of Talbot's gold, nearby
Amherst was the
seat of the local area but as Talbot increased in size and importance in 1875 it replaced
Amherst as the borough/municipality.
Talbot was a thriving centre in the early days of the gold rush and many historic buildings remain. Visit the Talbot Arts & Historical Museum to see relics, photos and hear stories from Victoria's golden age.
