the small town of Eaglehawk Neck is the most northern settlement on the Tasman Peninsula. It takes its name from the narrow isthmus that joins the Tasman Peninsula to the Forester Peninsula and made
Port Arthur an excellent choice for the location of a convict settlement. It is about 400 meters long and no more than 30 metres wide at its most narrow point.
This narrow entrance to the Tasman Peninsula was set up as a barrier to escaping convicts using a line of dogs, chained in place to deter escapees. Some escaped but it was an effective barrier.
History has been made here with ship wrecks and more. It is close to some of the features of the Tasman National Park.
The posted photos show the bays on each side of the isthmus. Just imagine a narrow strip of land between.
