Jambal (snake) walk
20.6 km return | 2days | difficult
Wind your way through 9 km of open forest, enjoying spectacular
views of the Herbert River
Gorge, before reaching the edge of the escarpment.
The track then drops steeply onto a riverbank lined with shady she-oak trees. Beware! As refreshing as a dip may appear, do not swim as the river is
home to estuarine crocodiles.
Camp overnight before returning the same way.Juwun (Herbert River
Gorge) walK
51 km one way | 4-6 days. I difficult
Follow the Jambal walk into the Herbert River
Gorge.
camp overnight at Blanket Creek
camping area before following the Herbert River to
Orange Tree.
From there a track leads you to the Yamanie pick-up point.
Walls of
rock over 100 m high line both sides of
the gorge. Where creeks run into the river tacular gorges and rainforest-clad ridges are a mighlight.
The river is the centre of life in
the gorge. It provides a permanent source of water for wildlife. Wallabies drink from it and sea-eagles fish in it. For
barramundi and freshwater turtles, it is
home.
The rocky surfaces can make the trip through
the gorge slow and difficult. In
places, animal trails may make the walking easier. Keep watch for feral cattle and pigs. Never deliberately startle or approach these animals and ensure they have a clear path to escape.
