A volcanic landscape. Here is a bird's eye view of many of the features that make
Undara Volcanic National Park special. In the foreground, the
granite outcrop on which you are standing drops away to the vast, undulating basalt plain below. See the difference between the sparse upland vegetation and the taller, more dense
woodlands of the plain.A hidden lava tube tracks across this plain. If you look closely, you can detect a small strip of darker vegetation. This is a pocket of semi-evergreen monsoon vine thicket. The plants of the vine thicket grow in the moist protection of collapses and depressions in the lava and indicate the course of the ancient lava flows. The horizon is lined with hills, most of which are volcanic in origin. Among these is the Undara Volcano.
Its volcanic activity 190,000 years ago shaped much of the landscape stretching before you.
