The lava tubes were formed around 190,000 years ago following the eruption of a single shield volcano. The huge lava flows drained towards the sea, following the routes of ancient river beds, and as the lava cooled it formed a surface crust - just like skin on a cooling custard. The hot lava continued to flow through the centre of the tubes, eventually leaving these huge hollow basalt chambers.
The
Undara Experience resort is located at the northern end of the park providing accommodation and tours.
