Campbell Town is located in the Midland Highway 133 km north of
Hobart and 70 km south of
Launceston. It is a historic town having been the location of one of the four garrisons based between the two major centres to keep the peace. It is also the location of the oldest
bridge on this highway, the Red Brick
Bridge convict built between 1836 and 1838 was part of the original main road. It is in use still, carrying highway traffic.
The town was established in 1826 and was named by Governor Lachlan Macquarie in honour for his wife's maiden name. He also named the stream that passes under the
bridge from Relief Creek to the Elizabeth River, also after his wife. The Elizabeth River empties into the South Esk River and finally the wasters reach the Tarmar.
The town is part of an agricultural area noted for its fine wool production but also dairy and beef and grain. Vineyards are also making increasing inroads.
The town has a
population of just under 1,000 residents, is a strong commercial centre and attracts its share of tourists, as it is within proximity of many of Tasmania's tourist attractions. Most of its commercial buildings are stretched along the lengthy main street.
