Visiting Zeehan today, it is difficult to imagine that it was once a booming mining centre with a
population of approximately 10,000. Silver-lead deposits were discovered in 1882 and the boom commenced. The main street (actually named Main Street) is over three kilometres long. At the peak of activity the street was packed on both sides bu businesses, houses and pubs.
There is still some mining activity on the edge of town but the town has diminished from its former self. The 2011 senses put the
population at 728.
The West Coast Pioneers Memorial Museum in the main street is a popular must-see attraction for visitors to the area and there are plenty of old mining relics outside town including smelters and
old mine sites. The nearby Spray Tunnel is actually a former railway tunnel used to transport ore from the Spray
Mine to the smelters and is open to visitors for walk, or drive through. Follow local signs or refer to the Zeehan Spray Tunnel trek note in ExplorOz.
