Driving west on the Bass Highway from
Launceston, after
Westbury you will find the historic town of Deloraine. In reality it is bypassed by the highway but a short detour to see the town will be amply rewarded. The town is a located on the Meander River and is 50 km west of
Launceston and 52 km south of
Devonport. It has a
population of just less than 3,000. Deloraine is named after a character from the poem The Lay of the Last Minstrel, written by Sir Walter Scott. It is the principal town in the Meander Valley Council municipal area.
Deloraine is a predominantly rural farming town, but its historic homes and public buildings together with its shops and eateries make it a pleasing tourist destination. It is ideally placed for use as a base for visiting
Cradle Mountain and the Great Western Tiers, both of which lie to its south. The turn to
Mole Creek(Tasmanian Tigers) is just to the west of the town and an alternative road to
Hobart via the Central Highlands leads from it to the south.
Agricultural activities in the area produce poppies, herbs, onions and potatoes. Deloraine is also
home to the 41° South salmon and ginseng aqua
farm.
