The Bell Bay shipping terminal commenced operation in 1951. It substantially replaced the shipping facilities that had previously been supplied by the wharves on the banks of the Tarmar River at
Launceston. The opening of the port coincided with the construction of major industries such as the aluminium smelter that operates there. Later a manganese alloy smelter was built and a power station is located near by.
A substantial industrial area surrounds
the wharf. The area houses several other industries and support businesses for the major operations.
