Burke and Wills arrived at Swan
Hill on 6/9/1860 and departed on 11/9/1860. At the time Swan
Hill had 140 inhabitants and was just a small outpost on the Murray. Size of the party made progress slow and although this was a place where a permanent
camp was to be established it was decided to dismiss some of the party and continue largely intact to the
Darling River. On the 11/9/1860 they packed up and crossed the Murray into NSW. Prior to this a Captain
Cadell offered Burke his paddle-steamer Lady
Augusta to load the supplies and take them to Pooncarrie. Burke refused. This had repercussions on supplies and delays, Had Burke taken up the offer what took 15 days overland travel could have been done in less than 2.
