Kingston-on-Murray is a small township on the south bank of the
Murray River. It lies within the heart of a rich agricultural district and the area around the town is characterised by vineyards and orchards. The town is important as one of the major
Murray River crossing points, which historically was by a vehicular cable ferry crossing but in 1973 a
bridge was constructed taking the Sturt Highway around the edge of the town.
The town's shady riverbank is perfect for picnics with free barbecues, chairs, tables and
toilets, and a nearby
general store for provisions.
Local wineries are Banrock Station and
Kingston Estate, with a wetland centre at at Banrock consisting of an 8km boardwalk trail featuring information huts, and bird hides.
River cruises depart daily, or visitors can hire a houseboat. This part of the Riverland is a delightful place to stay a while and explore.
