Alberrie Creek was once a
railway siding on the Old Ghan line 30km west of
Marree on the
Oodnadatta Track that has all but gone to dust. But there is something else here now instead that has made this place a worthwhile tourist stop. Coming from
Marree you see two 1940’s Beechcraft Barron aircraft standing on their tails and joined at the wings like some modern day totem in the desert. As you draw closer you'll notice a large area of sculptures in the desert made of parts from all sorts of machinery, bits of railway and even airplanes.
Mutonia Scultpure Park is a project by Robin
Cook, formerly a mechanic and now artist and his creations are a collection of whimsical larger than life outdoor exhibits. This project started in 1997 and each winter he returns to add a new work of art. Pieces are created from recycled rubbish and usually created back
home in Victoria and trucked in for installation.
"Kombi Gate" is a real Kombi van that has been sliced in half, lengthwise, and positioned to form the gated entrance into the sculpture park. - a classic symbol of outback travel.
