The Gurney family leased Koonalda Station from 1938 to 1988. This station was only feasible because water for their stock was pumped from
Koonalda Cave lakes into above ground storage tanks. Historic pumping equipment still remains in the
cave today.
Koonalda Station was South Australia's most western pastoral property for 50 years. In 1989, it became part of Nullarbor National Park and is now part of the National Estate
Heritage Trust.
Visitors with a SA Parks Pass may
camp at Koondalda - pick a spot for
bush camping, or stay in the shearers hut or even in the main
homestead. You're welcome to explore but please leave everything in place for the next visitors to enjoy. The
homestead still has various fixtures for you to peek into their life - bathroom with fixtures, beds, an old-school sewing machine, and a pot-bellied stove in the kitchen.
If you don't have a Park Pass, you can pick up one in
Ceduna, or call the
Ceduna National Parks office (on the number above) and they'll take your casual
overnight camp fee over the phone. No onsite
ranger or honesty box etc.
Recent restoration works include new roofing on the shearers hut with 2 rain water tanks that we found operational (and good tasting water!) in August 2013.
Take a look around and explore the incredible graveyard of cars too! You could spend a lot of time exploring here.
