Visited: Aug 2013. Access to the
cave is now not possible as the
gate is locked and there is no sign of a ladder under the
gate. The
cave is still worth a visit.
I last visited
Koonalda Cave in about 1983. It was uninhabited and there was a
gate over the access ladder into the
cave. There was a windmill and a winch on the edge of the
cave. I was lucky enough to have access to the key for the
gate and we went down into the
cave to find some fruit trees growing in the bottom of the open section, supposedly planted by the station owners many years ago. The station has been long abandoned due to
dingo's.
Dingo fence is to the east of
Koonalda. We followed the
cave for a while (to long ago to remember) and came across an underground lake, above was the windmill shaft protruding through the roof.
I do have some photos but will have to find and scan them.
