The township consists of 6 cottages once used by DCA staff and personnel operating the Bureau of Meteorology weather station. Managers now live on site, with other cottages providing self contained accommodation. Visitors are welcome. Camping areas are provided under shady trees and also at the old Met Office where bathroom, kitchen and Museum are located.
For courtesy, please call ahead to let them know of your arrival and your needs. You can book lunch (sandwiches, burgers etc) and dinner. You can also get a mudmap to highlight points of interest along the route up from
Eucla.
Accommodation in cottages is available, or you can pitch a
camp with power, showers,
toilets, kitchen amenities. Desal water can be purchased too. Firewood is provided and campfires at night are permitted.
Note the drive from
Eucla to
Forrest is very rough and slow going - expect to travel about 30km/hr and take 5 hours by taking it easy to avoid punctures on the sharp
limestone track.
The equipment at the met station is no longer functioning and was been stripped out and put on display in the museum. There is lots to see here and a hive of activity as
Forrest Airfield
services daily visitors arriving by plane to refuel on their way and other visitors such as 4WD and motorbike tourers passing through into the
Great Victoria Desert.
