Gwalia Museum was opened in 1972 as the Gwalia Historical Gallery in the former Sons of Gwalia
Mine Office by an enthusiastic group of locals keen to preserve the history of the
mine and Gwalia. Over the years, restoration work has been done on many of the cottages while the former
mine office houses a huge collection of objects and photographs showcasing the life and times of the
mine and the people who worked there.
The Museum also has an outdoor display of mining machinery next to the timber incline headframe and winder.
There are no entry fees. A donation however will be much appreciated as it will help fund the conservation and upkeep of
Gwalia Ghost Town & Museum. Allow a couple of hours to see the Gwalia Museum and Hoover House before exploring the cottages and other buildings in Gwalia.
Hoover House is a luxury Bed and Breakfast and function venue where guests, museum visitors and travellers can enjoy coffee on the verandah overlooking the vast open pit of the modern gold
mine on the site of the historical Sons of Gwalia
Mine.
Dog friendly (on lead at all times).
Gwalia Museum is open from 9am to 4pm daily with the exception of a short break over
Easter and the Christmas and New Year period.
Drive directly to the Gwalia Museum on the
hill to gain entry. For RV owners visiting the museum, there is ample
parking for vehicles at the free RV Site outside the entry gates, although caravans may only be parked at the site if the
Leonora Caravan Park is full.
