Once a thriving rural and then highway town, Jugiong nearly died when it was bypassed in the 1990's by the Hume Freeway. Some enterprising locals decided it had to be saved and invested in the Long Track Cafe and Pantry to attract highway traffic and local custom.
Free camping on the adjacent reserve was encouraged (donations accepted but not compulsory). With easy access to major nearby towns and to
Canberra, both the cafe and the camping became wildly successful. Soon after, the wine outlet featuring local wines, spirits and liqueurs was added. The increasing popularity of the village inspired the renovation of the then run-down
Sir George Hotel into an inviting place to both stay and eat.
The village is a monument to local initiative and inspiration and deserves your custom if you're passing by.
