Harvey's Gully was the scene of a fatal train smash in 1910 when an axle broke on the morning train to
Mansfield. The accident caused a carriage to tip off the
bridge into Harvey's Gully. A piece of wood from the 6 wheeled carriage was repurposed to create a collection box at Saint Lukes Church in
Yea near the
Yea Railway station - you can still see it there today.
The small
bridge where the carriage toppled was eventually destroyed by fires in 1969. It was replaced by a steel pipe culvert still recognisable today at this location. So stand a moment here and contemplate these tragedies of yesteryear.
