Serpentine Gorge is a sacred site to Western Arrernte Aboriginal people. It’s name in Western Arrernte is Ulpma (uhlp-Mah).
Serpentine Gorge is also the
Trailhead for sections 7 and 8 of the Larapinta Trail, a 231-kilometre long distance walking trail through the
West MacDonnell Ranges.Access is by conventional two-wheel drive vehicles and is suitable to caravans, except when wet (unsealed track). There is a caravan
parking area just before the main carpark/picnic site.
The gorge is reached via a short, easy walk from this
carpark (1.3km/30min return) into a sheltered
gorge and
waterhole. There is also a very steep, but worthwhile walk up to a
lookout.There is a shade
shelter, unisex bush
toilet and picnic tables in the
carpark area but there is no camping permitted here other than for Larapinta trail walkers (2 elevated tent pads enough for two tents or 3-4 sleeping bags per pad).
The Gorge is known for several rare and endemic plant species like the Centralian flannel flower and MacDonnell Ranges cycad.
