A large
campground with separate generator and non-generator areas near Mertens Creek at the beginning of the walk trail to Punamii/
Mitchell Falls. This
campground is sometimes still referred to as
Mitchell Falls
campground but has been renamed Mertens
Campground. The Parks Department will no longer be charging visitor entry fees to
Mitchell River National Park. Camping fees at this
campground will still apply.
Some
camp sites have their own fire ring. Firewood must be collected before entering the park. Firewood collecting areas are signposted along Port Warrender Road. Preferably use your own portable gas or fuel stove.
There are
toilet facilities around the
campground however there are no showers. There is a swimming area downstream of the start of the walk trail. Soaps and detergents are not permitted in the creeks and rivers. There are water taps at all of the
toilet facilities but it is recommended that water is boiled or otherwise treated before drinking.
Walk 800m to nearest
swimming hole then continue past art sites, Mertons Falls and
Gorge, woodland, monsoon vine forest, rocky spinifex outcrops, paperbark lined
waterhole and then the mighty
Mitchell Falls after 3.5km. Best light for photos is an hour either side of noon.
