This
junction is
well signed and provides the only access to the
Mitchell Plateau region. Sites of interest on the
Mitchell Plateau are
Mitchell Falls, Surveyors
Pool and Port Warrender. There is no access or vehicle tracks to Lawley River National Park or the
Kimberley Coastal
Camp. There is plenty of room to get off the track at this
junction with flat areas and shady trees providing a great spot to take a break.
Most visitors only go to the
Mitchell Falls. This track is 85km long and is rough and poorly maintained. Allow 2 hours in a single 4WD and 3 hours if towing so that your shocks can cool down. A
bush camp with
toilets is provided by with fees payable. Helicopter scenic flights are available for a few months during the peak tourist season.
The track to Surveyor's
Pool turns off 18km before the
Mitchell Falls
camp and is another 27km drive further on. This rarely used track leads to a
carpark where an unmarked walk trail of 4km leads to
the pool.(beware estuarine crocodiles).
The only coastal point accessible on the
Mitchell Plateau is
Walsh point, which is another 24km beyond the turnoff to Surveyor's
Pool. A
lookout marks the start of the descent off the plateau and a deterioration in the track.
Bush camping is possible here, but campers are cautioned due to the risk of estuarine crocodiles, and extreme remoteness. The last 8km past the
warning sign is genuine 4WD with tall grass blocking the view of large boulders.
