Remote location is a 120km round trip using
Mitchell falls
camp as a base. Drive 18km back to Airport turnoff and turn left. Track is actually less corrugated as not many adventure along it. Pass turnoff to Surveyors
pool after 20km and reach
lookout to Point in 5 more. Descend off plateau as track deteriorates. Last 8km is roughest as pix show.
A fishermans report. Walsh Point itself is not worth the trip. The only reason for going there is to the access to some incredibly remote and beautiful fishing spots. The photos attached do not show the steepness of the track, and a couple of sections in the last 8km makes getting a boat in there prettty tough. Our boats were all loaded on top of off road trailers, but it is possible to get a normal boat trailer in there - but good luck. There are limited camping spots on top of a
bluff (with a bush
toilet), with a short track down to
the beach, made up of football size
granite rocks.
Had read that the place was infested with mozzies & sandflies, but we didn't have any troubles. We did see a large croc near the boat launching area, so be alert. You will inevitably run into one or more of the boats from the two professional guided fishing camps across the bay - don't expect a hello from them, as they class the whole area as their private fishing paradise and don't like visitors.
A boat trip to Steep Head Island (50km return) is
well worth the trip - nice sandy beaches and very beautiful. A quick dip in the shallow, clear water is possible, but Black Tip Reef
Sharks and crocs are always around somewhere . Warning - about half way to Steep Head, there is a dangerous reef with large pointy rocks that protrude 4 or 5 metres at low tide, but are unseen at high tide. Google Earth shows a dark patch about 2km ENE of a small unnamed island just short of half way - that's probably the reef.
