These lime kilns were constructed by the Ghan Railway Line workers to make their own cement for the bridges and culverts. They fired the dolomite
rock found in this area by heaping wood in the bottom of the kilns then laying
the rock on top and then firing until
the rock was reduced to powder.
When the kilns were cooled, the residue powder was raked out and this was then used as concrete to construct the many culverts and bridges on the Ghan line in this area.
