Emu Bay Lavender Farm - SA

Emu Bay Lavender eventuated from our dreams (Maria and Tony) when we began looking at ways to diversify to diversify our property and, after a lot of thought and research, growing lavender seemed to be a good idea.
In February 2001 we decided to plant a small area of garden with five different varieties of lavender, this was the beginning of Emu Bay Lavender.
The Lavender Farm is situated on 1700 acres of Land that is farmed commercially for wool and grain and is “always Busy”.
In June 2002 we began the job of planning and preparing the paddock for our first big lavender planting. These plants were in the ground by the end of July 2002, with a total of six different varieties:
Grosso
Miss Donnington
Seal
Munstead
Super
Impress Purple
Our first harvest was in the Summer of 2003/04 with a total of 1000 bunches, which were harvested and later stripped by hand. The process yielded about 13 kg of Dried Lavender.
The Farm
Emu Bay Lavender has a total area of 1 hectare with 10 different varieties of Angustifolia and Intermedia Lavender.
There are 5,500 producing lavenders which was expanded in 2007/08 with planting of another 3,500 plants of the existing varieties.
Nowadays, Emu Bay Lavender harvests about 8,000 bunches each year, producing 150 kg of dried, stripped flower.
Emu Bay Lavender expanded in the winter of 2009, building onto our existing shop with a product room and addtional cafe’ and light meal area, this was nessecary due to the increase in visitor numbers.
All Emu Bay Lavender products are made on site.
